The German logistics company DHL Supply Chain announced February 13 that it was investing $200 million to expand its healthcare and life sciences capabilities in the U.S.
Through the investment, DHL plans on opening five more warehouses in the U.S. by the end of 2024 to meet its customers' life sciences and healthcare needs, expanding the company's footprint to more than 13 million square feet.
The warehouses will be built in Pennsylvania and North Carolina. DHL said that the locations in Pennsylvania will position the company closer to major U.S. pharmaceutical hubs and research institutions. DHL also said that the North Carolina-based facilities will cater to the southeastern U.S.’s growing demand for life science logistics services.
Additionally, DHL plans on investing in warehouse technologies such as autonomous mobile robots, enhanced supply chain visibility tools and temperature-controlled systems that maintain the integrity of temperature-sensitive products.
“Resilient life sciences and healthcare supply chains are critical to the well-being of communities around the world,” said Jim Saponaro, the president of Life Sciences and Healthcare for DHL Supply Chain. “This significant investment reflects our commitment to providing the industry with the reliable, efficient, and temperature-controlled logistics solutions that’s needed to deliver life-saving treatments and products to patients in need. “Recent events have highlighted the importance of agile and resilient supply chains in the life sciences and healthcare sectors. Our investments in technology and strategic locations will empower our customers to better anticipate and navigate disruptions, ensuring uninterrupted delivery of critical supplies.”
